Pretty Good Shape (For The Shape I'm In)

about

On November 14th, 2020, Floyd Blair turned one hundred years old. He is Lucas Warford's grandfather. Floyd has been a husband, a father, a grandfather, a great-grandfather, a fighter pilot, an electrical engineer, a professional musician, and, allegedly, his first job (as a kid) was helping a guy fix jukeboxes.

The family had intended to spend this special birthday with him, but a certain GLOBAL PANDEMIC made this impossible. So, instead, Lucas tried to condense one hundred years of life down to a lighthearted, three and a half minute swing song. The joys of songwriting. Oh, and perform and record it live during a GLOBAL PANDEMIC. Thus the masks, thus the space. For those of you watching around the year 2020, you get it. For those of you watching in the future, this was a swing band that wore weird masks for surreal artistic purposes.

Everything in this song is true, except the parts that aren't, and you'll just have to talk to Floyd to figure out what's what.

Oh, and the cover? That's Floyd in WW2. Now you know where Lucas got his crazed face.

lyrics

Lyrics:
I've seen about as much as any man might care to see
from the beaches of the Caribbean to the shores of Normandy
I must admit I've slowed a bit
I'm not so often on the town
But for those who think I'm past my prime
and that I should just settle down...

take my hat, hold my coat
still plenty of kick in this old goat
I'm in pretty good shape
for the shape I'm in

sure i can play all night, work all day
last mountain I climbed was called mt. gay
call The Technicians, get my horns in line
strike up that band, have a real big time

watching the fire till the ribs are done
fly The Wreck to the islands to fetch some rum
I'm a jolly good fellow, i drink it clear
and a ramblin, gamblin hell of an engineer!

i ain't got time to touch the ground
my class voted me Best All-Around
and I'm in pretty good shape
for the shape I'm in

i flew my hundred, triumphantly
but ask me to go back I'd say "Nix compris!"
best believe it, Blair was there
i got medals hiding in the office somewhere

don't talk to me about history
I can look back on this whole century
and I'm in pretty good shape
for the shape I'm in

how I've lost
how I've gained
so many gone
so many remain
all these memories, priceless everyday
I'm a rich man... in memories, anyway

they called me The Preacher, that's an actual fact
come find me in my little brass shack
I'm untroubled by age, as you can tell
i could slap you so hard you'd be hearing bells

another year suits me just fine
i already got 99
and I'm in pretty good shape
for the shape I'm in
